How gender diversity and inclusivity can support sustainability

Speaker: Bettina Ring, chief sustainability and diversity officer, SFI

Bettina Ring, the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI)’s new chief sustainability and diversity officer, discusses the importance of diversity and inclusion in forest management and conservation. Diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives will help build upon the work that has already been done and make sure all voices are heard, and International Women’s Day is an opportunity to highlight the work that women have done and will continue to do in this area, Ring says. She also discusses the work that SFI is doing to help fight climate change and ensure forests are managed sustainably.

Bettina Ring
Bettina provides leadership internally and externally on strategic initiatives related to sustainability and diversity. She leverages SFI’s scale to drive meaningful change in the forest and conservation sector through collaboration with SFI’s network. Bettina works with SFI-certified organizations, customers, investors, conservation organizations and government agencies interested in collaborating with SFI to address material environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues. Bettina is passionate about and experienced at advancing sustainability through forest-focused collaboration, which is SFI’s mission. Prior to joining SFI, Bettina served as Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry for the Commonwealth of Virginia. She also served as Virginia’s State Forester. Bettina was the first woman appointed to both positions. Bettina holds a Bachelor of Science in Forestry and Wildlife from Virginia Tech and a Master of Business Administration from James Madison University. She also graduated from the Harvard Kennedy School Senior Executives in State and Local Government Program.
